Madhepura is home to one of India's most significant railway manufacturing facilities: the Electric Locomotive Factory, a joint venture between Alstom SA (France) and Indian Railways.

Ownership & Scale

The factory is a joint venture with Alstom holding 74% equity and Indian Railways 26%. Spread across roughly 250 acres, it has a manufacturing capacity of around 120 locomotives per year.

What It Produces

The plant manufactures WAG-12B electric locomotives — high-horsepower freight locomotives — as part of a €3.5 billion contract to supply 800 locomotives to Indian Railways, one of the largest contracts in Indian Railways' history.

Milestone: 500th Locomotive

In March 2025, Alstom delivered its 500th electric locomotive to Indian Railways from the Madhepura facility, a significant milestone for the project.
