Singheshwar Sthan, Madhepura

Singheshwar Sthan is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located about 8 km from Madhepura town (Dauram Madhepura railway station). It is one of the most visited religious and cultural landmarks in Madhepura district.

History and Legend

Local tradition traces the site back to the Treta Yuga, holding that Shringi Rishi — the sage associated with King Dasharath's Putreshthi Yajna in the Ramayana — meditated here and established a Shivling. The site is also referenced in the Varaha Purana, which describes the Shivling being discovered after a cow was observed offering milk at the spot.

The present-day temple structure was built roughly 200 years ago by a merchant named Hari Charan Choudhury, though the site's religious roots are believed to be far older.

Shivaratri Fair

A month-long fair is held around Shivaratri, considered one of the largest fairs in Bihar, along with a well-known cattle fair held at the same time.
